The Power of the Pen

DUKE AL has extensive experience facilitating creative writing workshops across a range of settings, working with underrepresented groups, young people, and communities facing challenges. He runs workshops called POWER OF THE PEN which are poetry, spoken word and creative writing-based. He works with all ages, from primary school children to the elderly, and can tailor these workshops to numerous themes, including mental health, imagination, perspective, race, and identity. Any topic can be woven into the sessions, with the overarching aim shaped by the chosen theme.

The common thread in all of DUKE AL's workshops is the belief that anybody can write and perform poetry, it is a tool for self-therapy, a positive coping mechanism, and a means of self-expression to share thoughts, opinions, and emotions. He has worked with many organisations, including Literature Wales, Arts Council Wales (Cynefin), Barnardo's, Llamau, People Speak Up, Voices in Care, The Alcohol Liaison Service, Arts for Health and Wellbeing, primary and secondary schools, and more.

There is a superpower within us all, the power of creativity. The pen is mightier than the sword. Rearrange the letters and it's a weapon of words.

The pen is your weapon of words. Sharpen your pen, sharpen your mind, and let the ink spill.

If you want to express yourself through words, rhythm, and performance, contact us to join spoken word poet DUKE AL for a workshop and experience the POWER OF THE PEN.

April Brynteg School, Bridgend

"Duke ran 3 poetry performance workshops with over 100 Year 7 pupils in each. All the pupils were totally captivated by Duke's poetry, style, and passion for language. In just 1 hour, Duke was able to showcase how to create a poem based on identity, one's beliefs, and influences. Duke's work tackled tough subjects like racism, bullying, and hidden disabilities with authenticity and compassion. By the end of the session, boys and girls alike were keen to stand up in front of their peers and recite their own original poems. We can't thank Duke enough for inspiring our pupils and helping them understand that poetry is far from boring or elitist. Poetry can be anything-a creative way to express yourself."
